Strange saga of the Bradley rumor

Strange saga of the Bradley rumor

45864512 Paul Sullivan’s latest delves into the strange saga of the Milton Bradley to Detroit rumor.

It began when White Sox analyst Steve Stone twittered that the Tigers were interested in trading for Bradley, adding the Cubs “should fly him in a private jet.”

WGN-AM personality David Kaplan picked up Stone’s tweet on his Chicagonow.com blog and it was reported widely in the blogosphere. Kaplan had another update on his blog with Stone’s Tweet about Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski denying any interest in Bradley.

So Stone starts the rumor and then also debunks it?

More from Kaplan’s blog.

Stone: Hendry hurting Ricketts

Stone: Hendry hurting Ricketts

51938Steve Stone was candid as usual, in his Q and A session with Ed Sherman. Stone is critical of the Tribune’s ownership and GM Jim Hendry, and has been highly critical of Hendry ever since the long time Cubs anaylst left (after a public rift with then Manager Dusty Baker).

At the time Hendry had no choice but to back his manager, and one has to wonder how objective Stone is when it comes to analyzing the Cubs GM?

Here are some of Stone’s comments.

“From 2003, Jim Hendry has the Cubs paying close to a billion dollars in salary or deferred salary. There are some big backloaded contracts. Alfonso Soriano is owed $106 million in the next six years. I thought the Milton Bradley contract (three years, $30 million) was excessive. That will make it tough on the new ownership.”

Stone talks Cubs/Sox

Stone talks Cubs/Sox

Steve Stone visited Dan Patrick’s show today and discussed both the Cubs and Sox series. He also talked about his days with Harry Caray.

Stone thinks Lou Piniella is more experienced than Ozzie Guillen, and that is the main difference between the two. Both, however, have a World Series ring on their finger. This season, most expected the Cubs to do well whereas expectations were lower for the White Sox. Guillen has done an incredible job of managing — he’s had to deal with key injuries and using young players without any experience. Dan loves Ozzie because he is such a refreshing personality.

Stone recalled his experiences withHarry Caray, and Dan loved thatRyne Sanbergspelled backwards is GRAB N ASS, which both got a kick out of. Stone laughed at Caray’s constant mispronouncing of names, but gives credit to Caray for teaching him the ins and outs of broadcasting and is “one of the greatest salesman of the game of baseball.”

Stoney won’t “put it on the board”?

Stoney won’t “put it on the board”?

Steve Stone will join Hawk Harrelson in the TV booth next season after all. Chi-ball had reported that the Sox were eyeing the potential duo. Stone had also been linked to potential Cubs ownership groups as a consultant. Darrin Jackson has been offered the analyst position on the radio to pair with Ed Farmer. Some have speculated that Farmer would go back to color and be replaced as the play by play man. We will try to find out more.

From Chi-ball:”Light him up” Sep 1

In the overheard department: A high ranking Chicago sports team official (whose area includes broadcasting) had an opinion on White Sox broadcasts. In his assessment, Ed Farmer is not a play-by-play man. He went on to say that Farmer is a terrific analyst, but doesn’t feel the broadcast has a play by play type flow. He also believed that a Hawk Harrelson and Steve Stone pairing is something the White Sox are eyeing next season in the television booth.

The pairing possibility remains to be seen, as Stone could possibly land a consultant type position if a group he has ties with ends up purchasing the Cubs. Stone has stated many times he would only be interested in a consulting type position or broadcasting. Darrin Jackson, current Sox TV analyst, has not had his deal renewed and sees the writing on the wall. Do not count D.J. out however, depending on the Stone situation.

Barry Rozner of the Daily Herald’s column answers a question we had.

You won’t hear Stone joining in when Harrelson makes a home run call, as does Darrin Jackson.

“Not gonna happen,” Stone said Saturday. “Hawk will have to put it on the board by himself.”

On the subject of Farmer, ESPNam1000’s Jonathan Hood and Ben Finfer agreed Sunday they do not feel Farmer paints a very clear picture while calling plays and believe Farmer is pretending to not be a former analyst by setting up Stone repeatedly with questions he knows the answers to.

NBC’s Keith Olberman was a guest on WSCR 670 am today and spoke with George Offman and Jesse Rogers regarding the Chicago baseball scene and added a priceless Ed Farmer imitation.
