The Blackhawks have confirmed winger Kris Versteeg has signed a three-year contract worth a reported $9.25 million.

Versteeg was the Hawks’ final restricted free agent believed to be among players who did not receive qualifying offers by the deadline agreed to in the NHL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement. The National Hockey League Players’ Association filed a grievance on behalf of the players but now have all signed.

Versteeg’s agent expects deal with Hawks

Hurricanes Blackhawks HockeyRoman Madrowski reports the agent for Kris Versteeg is in ongoing negotiations with the Chicago Blackhawks and hopes to get a deal done soon.

Versteeg is the last of the Hawks’ seven restricted free agents believed to have received qualifying offers after the June 29 deadline. The Blackhawks re-signed the other six on Monday.

The National Hockey League Players Association filed a grievance Monday over the Hawks’ handling of the qualifying offers. If the NHL rejects the grievance, the matter will go to an arbitrator. At that point, it would be possible for Versteeg to be declared an unrestricted free agent, and the Hawks could lose the talented, young forward on the open market.

But Versteeg’s agent David Kaye said he doesn’t want it to get to that point.

“We’ve been negotiating with Chicago fairly regularly here, and I expect hopefully something will get done in the next few days,” Kaye said Tuesday.

When asked if it’s possible a deal will be reached Tuesday, Kaye said: “You never know. You know how negotiations are.”

Versteeg in limbo

Versteeg in limbo

versteegChris Kuc has the latest on the Kris Versteeg situation. Six of the Hawks’ restricted free agents, including defenseman Cam Barker, were re-signed on Monday, while Kris Versteeg remains unsigned in the wake of the team apparently improperly filing qualifying offers to the players, causing it to miss the deadline.

The defenseman could have remained unsigned and waited on the result of a grievance filed Monday by the National Hockey League Players’ Association that is now pending before an arbitrator. The arbitrator could rule Versteeg is an unrestricted free agent and could sign with any team.

As a finalist for the league’s rookie of the year, Versteeg could sign elsewhere for more money than the Hawks would have offered him, which typically is a 10 percent raise for restricted free agents. He earned $490,000 last year. General manager Dale Tallon is negotiating with David Kaye, Versteeg’s agent.

Did Hawks goof on offers?

Did Hawks goof on offers?

Blackhawks Savard Fired HockeyThe Tribune reports The NHL and NHLPA are investigating whether the Blackhawks correctly filed qualifying offers to several key players, including Kris Versteeg, Cam Barker, Ben Eager and Troy Brouwer, TSN reported Friday.

If the offers are ruled invalid, the players could be deemed unrestricted free agents.

One source told TSN the players involved didn’t receive the necessary notification of the offers. The NHL is trying to determine whether the situation was remedied in time. Hawks GM Dale Tallon said the qualifying offers were mailed to the players in time — on June 29 — but said because of the July 1 Canadian holiday, some of the players didn’t receive them in time.

Additional sources said qualifying offers are not supposed to be mailed. Tallon said fax copies of the offers were sent to the league, so he doesn’t anticipate any significant fallout. But sources said some of the offers were not faxed to the agents.
