Hester has arrived
Anyone who doesn’t think Devin Hester is a legitimate No. 1 receiver hasn’t been paying attention to the past three games.
In that time, Hester has 21 catches, and only the Cardinals’ Larry Fitzgerald has more. Hester’s 21 receptions have produced 265 yards. Maybe even more impressive, in the past two games, Hester has been targeted by Jay Cutler 17 times, and he has 15 catches, meaning that he’s getting open and he’s catching everything close.
For the season, Hester has 35 receptions, 10 more than the nearest teammate, Earl Bennett. Hester has 454 receiving yards, 120 more than Bennett, who is second. That puts Hester on pace for 80 catches and 1,038 yards, which look a lot like go-to-guy numbers.

Urlacher denies criticizing Cutler
According to Brian Urlacher, Bobby Wade is trying to stir up unnecessary trouble.
That is how the Bears’ linebacker viewed the comments his ex-teammate offered to a Minneapolis radio station Wednesday, comments suggesting that Urlacher was not too fond of new teammate Jay Cutler.
“Oh please. I don’t think I would ever say that about one of my teammates,” Urlacher told the Tribune. “Look, Bobby Wade’s a friend of mine. He’s trying to get things going before training camp. That’s just Bobby being Bobby. I’m pretty sure Jay knows I wouldn’t say that about him.
Wade called Urlacher Wednesday afternoon to apologize and told Urlacher he would call coach Lovie Smith to clarify if necessary. Urlacher also was humored by aWSCR-AM report that he had to be restrained from going after Cutler during organized team activities.

Bears don’t need pro bowl receiver, Angelo/Lovie rank fourth overall?
Brad Biggs latest has some intresting nuggets, one has the Bears not needing a pro bowl wide receiver to win the Super Bowl and the other has Jerry Angelo and Lovie Smith ranking fourth in the NFL for GM/Head Coach combos.
Dallas Morning News writer Rick Gosselin did an interesting breakdown of Super Bowl winners from 1991 to the present and how the makeup of offenses has changed. History proves you don’t need an elite receiver to win the Big Game — not anymore, anyway. It’s good news for the Bears, right? They have nine wideouts on their roster, and only two have more than seven career catches: Devin Hester and Rashied Davis.
”Neither of the last two Super Bowl champions — Pittsburgh in 2008 or the New York Giants in 2007 — had a Pro Bowl wide receiver that season,” Gosselin writes. ”Neither had a Pro Bowl quarterback, for that matter. The Steelers finished 17th in the NFL in passing and the Giants were 21st.
”Only two NFL champs in the 2000 decade lined up a Pro Bowl wide receiver in their Super Bowl seasons — Troy Brown for the Pats in 2001 and Marvin Harrison for the Indianapolis Colts in 2006. The rest preferred quantity over quality on the flank.’
It seems that the last month or so has been one projection followed by one list followed by another projection. ESPN’s John Clayton put together the top five coach/general manager combinations in the NFL, and he ranks Jerry Angelo and Lovie Smith fourth:
”Lovie Smith-Jerry Angelo, Bears: This one might surprise some because Angelo isn’t a vocal GM and the Bears, as a team, usually slip under the radar. They stay in contention most years in the NFC North and made it to the Super Bowl in 2006. Angelo made one of the biggest moves of the offseason, acquiring quarterback Jay Cutler, who could take the Bears to 11 wins. In the meantime, Smith has taken over the play-calling duties on defense and expects an improved, more aggressive unit this fall.”
