Rosenthal: White Sox deal Vasquez to Braves

Ken Rosenthal says Javy Vasquez is on his way to Atlanta. The Sox are doing a good job of moving contracts and replenishing the farm system.

The White Sox will send Vazquez and left-handed reliever Boone Logan to the Braves for four players — infielder Brent Lillibridge, Class A catcher Tyler Flowers and two low minor leaguers.

The deal is contingent on the players involved passing physicals; Vazquez will take his physical in Atlanta on Wednesday. An official announcement could come Wednesday or Thursday, sources said.

The deal fulfills the Braves’ desire to add front-line starting pitching while continuing the White Sox’s quest to get younger and more athletic while reducing their payroll

For the White Sox, the trade of Vazquez will mark their second major move of the offseason. They earlier sent first baseman/outfielder Nick Swisher and a minor league pitcher to the Yankees for infielder Wilson Betemit and two minor-league pitchers, and continue to discuss trades for outfielder Jermaine Dye.

Heyman: Sox dangling three

Heyman: Sox dangling three

SI.com’s Jon Heyman confirms what we have been saying. The Sox are looking to blow things up. Jermaine Dye, Javier Vasquez, and Bobby Jenks are all on the table. The Dye to the Reds rumor for Homer Bailey may have legs.

The White Sox should be one of the more interesting teams this winter, as they appear to be one contending team taking offers on some of their better players, including outfielder Jermaine Dye, closer Bobby Jenks and pitcher Javier Vazquez. Sox GM Ken Williams has historically been the most aggressive GM, and word is that he and manager Ozzie Guillen would like to make the team younger and faster.

The Reds have shown an interest in Dye, and the report in WCKY in Cincinnati that a deal of hard-throwing pitching prospect Homer Bailey and another prospect for Dye was discussed has not been denied. Bailey’s stock has to be down, but the Sox are one team that seems to be able to harness the talents of hard throwers (see Jenks and Matt Thornton).

White Sox asking too much for Dye?

White Sox asking too much for Dye?

Were told the Sox are still aggressively trying to move Jermaine Dye, Javier Vasquez and Bobby Jenks. It was probably no coincidence that team mouthpiece Ozzie Gullien came out publicly and did not disregard a deal involving his closer.

Ken Rosenthal says the White Sox asking price for Jermaine Dye is too steep.

Dye, earning $11.5 million in the final year of his contract, amounts to a one-season rental. He can block trades to six clubs, most of which are in the northeast, according to a major-league source.

One potentially interested executive said his team was concerned that Dye batted only .210 with runners in scoring position and two outs last season – 36 points below the American League average.

Lance McAlister of 1530 WCKY Cincinnati has this rumor of Dye to the Reds. This is the same Lance McAlister that used to host “Sportspage” on CLTV back in the early-mid 90’s. Looks a little different.

  Things I’m told
MLB sources tell me the White Sox and Reds have been involved in trade talks.
I’m told the White Sox initiated the talks. The potential deal involves the Sox sending RF Jermaine Dye to the Reds in exchange for Homer Bailey and another player.
What do you think?
Dye is a right handed run producer that plays RF. He will be 35 in January.
He leads all AL OF in HR’s since 2005 with 137.
He has a gun for an arm, but does not move well in the OF.
Money wise: Here is his contract situation.
20009:$11.5M
2010:$12M mutual option ($1M buyout)
He has a limited no trade clause
Homer is 22-years old and has thrown just 81.2 major league innings.

White Sox and Cubs GM meeting rumors

White Sox and Cubs GM meeting rumors

A round up of rumors from the GM meetings in California regarding the White Sox and Cubs;

The Trib’s Dave Van Dyck reports the Sox are looking to move both Javier Vasquez and Nick Swisher. Van Dyck also had a White Sox contact tell him the club was looking at Colorado outfielder Willy Taveras. Taveras only had a .308 OBP last year but stole 68 bases, something Ozzie Gullien wants more of. In addition to those names, Mets second basemen Luis Castillo and Red Sox infielder Julio Lugo are mentioned as possible matches on a Vasquez deal. On the Swisher front, Sox GM Kenny Williams sounded like he didn’t know where he would play. Williams did say it was a “long off-season” when asked about Swishers’ position. That comment could allude to a Swisher or Paul Konerko deal. One that could open up first base for Swisher who played the position very well last year. Van Dyck, however adds that Swisher did not adapt to the Sox aggressive hitting philosophy and says he could be a better fit back in Oakland or Boston where patience is valued.

The Cubs meanwhile look to retain Ryan Dempster and Kerry Wood according to most media reports. The reports vary on the level of interest regarding the Padres Jake Peavy. Padres GM Kevin Towers is looking to clear payroll and get a significant return of young players. The Cubs reportedly have put together a package that would include the likes of Sean Marshall, Felix Pie, Jose Ceda, and Ronny Cedeno. We would not rule out a three team deal either. The Braves are hot on the trails of Dempster according to sources. If the Cubs fail to sign Dempster the Cubs could turn their attention to Derrick Lowe, AJ Burnett, or as Bruce Levine of ESPN am1000 reported today Ben Sheets. It has been noted the Cubs have an interest in either Raul Ibanez to play right or Brian Roberts to play second base. It is worth mentioning that Hendry has had an interest in Nick Swisher before. Hendry had Swisher as his back-up plan to Kosuke Fukudome last year. Could a cross-town deal be looked at?

Verducci: Vasquez no prime, Kosuke exploited

Verducci: Vasquez no prime, Kosuke exploited

SI.com’s Tom Verducci points to then Dodgers taking advantage of Kosuke Fukudome’s brutal performance in the NLDS. He also breaks down what is wrong with Javy Vasquez.

Cubs manager Lou Piniella buried his right fielder, Kosuke Fukudome, after NLDS Game 2, announcing in brutally frank terms Fukudome would be benched, an unceremonious move that can’t go over well in Japan. But the truth is Fukudome is a big part of what is wrong with the Cubs: They need a legitimate left-handed hitter badly, and he’s not close to being the answer. Look at what Dodgers manager Joe Torredid in Game 2: With Fukudome due up, rather than bring in left-handed reliever Joe Beimel to face Reed Johnson, who would have pinch-hit for Fukudome, Torre brought in right-handed reliever Corey Wadeto make sure Fukudome stayed in the game. Fukudome grounded out, extending his hitless NLDS.

What happened to the prime of the career of Javier Vazquez? It never happened. The White Sox right-hander is now 32 years old and has a career record of 127-129, with ERAs worse than the league average in three of the past five years. There are no injuries to blame. Except for his ability to make every start, he is a most ordinary pitcher when, after winning 16 games at age 25, he looked like he would be extraordinary. His blowup Thursday in ALDS Game 1 added to his reputation as a poor big-game pitcher. The White Sox can’t feel great knowing that he will get the ball again against Tampa Bay if they can extend the series that far.
