Lou has tough decision with Lee
Paul Sullivan’s latest has Lou Piniella wrestling with the idea of benching Derek Lee.
“You see so many batting averages that are down. I mean, where does the offense come from? We’re pretty close to last in all of baseball in extra-base hits. So there’s work to be done … and you know what? Hopefully the pieces are here.” Piniella said.
With a payroll of $135 million, third in the majors, Piniella had better hope the pieces are there. One of the biggest dilemmas facing the Cubs manager has been what to do about Lee.

Lee not bothered by line up switch
Derek Lee will probably hit fifth when Aramis Ramirez returns to the line up, something that isn’t bothering him. Lee has taken some hits from fans and the media lately. Other than his one career year in 2005, Lee has held close to his career averages, slightly down in slugging.

Could this just be one of those one game whims Lou has, or is he looking at this over a period of time? Stay tuned for Saturday’s line up.

D costs Hoffpauir playing time
Lou Piniella seemed disappointed in his statement that Micah Hoffpauir would lose playing time in right field due to his suspect defense. Piniella said that Reed Johnson would get playing time in center with Kosuke Fukudome in right, while Milton Bradley is unavailable. Piniella and his coaching staff have been impressed with Hoffpauir’s production at the plate, but can’t seem to find him at bats because of his poor defense.
