White Sox trade Brian Anderson
UPDATE:
Tribune reports the White Sox received Mark Kotsay and cash considerations.
Kotsay, 33, is a .281 (1,543-5,493) hitter with 306 doubles, 110 home runs and 614 RBI over 13 major-league seasons with Florida (1997-2000), San Diego (2001-03), Oakland (2004-07), Atlanta (2008) and Boston (2008-09). The 6-foot-0, 205-pounder batted .257 (19-74) with one homer and five RBI in 27 games with the Red Sox in 2009 before being designated for assignment on Friday.
Boston Globe reports the White Sox have dealt Brian Anderson to the Red Sox, it’s unclear what the White Sox got in return.
The Red Sox today traded for righthanded hitting White Sox outfielder Brian Anderson, a major league source confirmed. What is still unclear is what the Red Sox will send to Chicago in exchange for Anderson, who is hitting .238 with two homers on the season and was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte on July 20.

Fields squeezed out?
Josh Fields may be the odd man out when Carlos Qentin returns according to Mark Gonzaels. With Gordon Beckham holding down third base and Jayson Nix filling a utility role, Fields may be sent back down to AAA.
“In the situation I’m in, the only thing I can do is help the team when I get in there and take advantage of at-bats,” Fields said Sunday. “Whatever happens, happens.”
Fields has hit three home runs in his last 10 games and has played flawlessly at first base when spelling Paul Konerko.
But whether that is enough to stay on the 25-man roster remains to be seen. Jayson Nix has earned the utility role because of his ability to play the outfield as well as three infield positions.
Manager Ozzie Guillen appears committed to pulling Quentin in late-inning situations, which might necessitate the need to keep outfielders Brian Anderson and Dewayne Wise. Anderson has one minor-league option but is the Sox’s best defensive outfielder. Wise is out of options.

Anderson odd man out?
Joe Cowley thinks its time for the White Sox to close the book on Brian Anderson. Cowley quotes Ozzie Guillen as saying Scott Podsednik is his centerfielder when Carlos Quentin returns.
Outfielder Brian Anderson didn’t see the comments from White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen last weekend. But he never really needed to.
It’s a numbers game now. With every day that Carlos Quentin gives a thumbs-up on a rehab program to strengthen his injured left foot, Anderson and Dewayne Wise know it’s one day closer to one of them being gone.
That was obvious when Guillen was asked during the Cubs series if he had the confidence to move leadoff hitter Scott Podsednik from left field to center to make room for Quentin when the power hitter is ready to return. That would end the platoon of Wise and Anderson.
”Yes, I will,” Guillen said with very little hesitation. ”If [Podsednik] continues to play like that, and the other two guys play the way they’re playing, there’s no doubt he will be my center fielder. If B.A. [Anderson] and D. Wise keep playing like this, that’s one man out. Pods will be my center fielder.”
Podsednik will be his center fielder. That’s a no-brainer.
But general manager Ken Williams should make the decision easier on Guillen. That means it’s time to close the book on the Brian Anderson era and trade the former first-round pick — not only for the Sox’ sake by clearing the pending logjam, but more important, for Anderson’s sake.

Ozzie wants Podsednik back for 2010?
Scott Podsednik’s solid play is going to create a playing time dilema for Ozzie Guillen. Does “Pods” take away at bats from Brian Anderson in center when Carlos Quentin returns? Mark Gonzales says Ozzie would endorse a return of Podsednik for 2010.
Brian Anderson is inching closer toward securing the full-time center field job. Carlos Quentin is expected to return after the All-Star break and play left field — Podsednik’s current spot. Jermaine Dye can become a free agent after this season, and he’s entrenched in right field.
The situation could be resolved if the Sox slip from playoff contention, although manager Ozzie Guillen said he would endorse an extension for Podsednik if general manager Ken Williams asked him.
“Maybe people will be interested in [Podsednik] if we’re not in the pennant race,” Guillen said. “There are a lot of good things for him right now after being out of baseball earlier in the season.”

Anderson’s job to loose
Looks like Brian Anderson will have his shot at the centerfield job, with Scott Podsednik waiting in the wings. It doesn’t look like Jerry Owens should make any plans to stay in Chicago long. Word has it Ozzie Gullien has pretty much given up on Owens at this point.
