Sox have pieces for Halladay?
Phil Rogers thinks the White Sox could put together a strong enough package for Roy Halladay. Rogers also mentions the Brewers and Cardinals as strong contenders to acquire the ace.
Keep an eye on the White Sox. They could open some payroll space by dealing one of their right-handed relievers (Scott Linebrink or Octavio Dotel, most likely, but for a big enough price maybe Bobby Jenks) and have a lot of ways to structure a potential offer.
One way would be to build a package around Gavin Floyd, whose value has increased because of the contract extension he signed in March (four years, $15.5 million, with an option for 2013). Were the Jays to demand Gordon Beckham or Alexei Ramirez, that would be a deal killer — and needing a shortstop, Ricciardi might want one of those two — but almost anything else can be on the table.

Williams tipping deal?
Kenny Williams sounded like someone preparing the Sox fan base for a potential deal. A deal that could look like a move for the future, or as Williams put it, a neutral deal for now. Scot Gregor tries to breakdown Kenny’s quotes.
GM Kenny Williams said he’s not going to be a “seller” Tuesday, meaning he won’t start dumping veterans before the July 31 trade deadline.
But Kenny did say something that’s open to interpretation:
“Some people might perceive a potential deal to where we sell, just because it may be a younger player, they may be thinking: ‘They’ve thrown in the towel,’’’ Williams said. “In fact, we might view it as a neutral deal for ‘09, but for (20)10, ’11 and ’12, you may be better as a result of it.”
I think Kenny meant to say “may be FOR a younger player,” meaning trading a White Sox veteran for a young guy.

White Sox sellers?
Joe Cowley wonders how much time before Kenny Williams shifts gears from buyers to sellers. Everything we have heard up until now points to the White Sox being aggressive in pursuing a pitcher. However, if the losses pile up and Carlos Quentin is out for an extended period of time, could all bets be off? Williams gives out a warning himself.
Sox general manager Ken Williams always has a plan. But in the midst of eight losses through the first 11 games in June, some people might not like the latest one.”Hard decisions always have to be made, but very clearly, we are in a transitional phase and if this team doesn’t pick it up at some point, I’m going to have to do some things that maybe aren’t the most popular, but in the best interest of the club,” Williams said.
Translation: Kaboom — time to blow it up.
That means the likes of Jermaine Dye, Octavio Dotel and perhaps Bobby Jenks could be elsewhere before the trade deadline at the end of July.
Adding a big-name superstar, as the Sox tried to do in mid-May with San Diego Padres ace Jake Peavy, doesn’t sound like much of an option at this point.
”Fortunately, we have so much depth that we don’t automatically have to look outside the organization to feel like we can have improvement,” Williams said. ”But facts are facts. We are trying to win, and we are trying to transition to a team with more speed, better defense, across the board smarter.
”There are some growing pains that are associated with that. I just hope that the learning curve is somewhat quicker so that would allow me to get some sleep at night.”

Heyman: Sox dangling three
SI.com’s Jon Heyman confirms what we have been saying. The Sox are looking to blow things up. Jermaine Dye, Javier Vasquez, and Bobby Jenks are all on the table. The Dye to the Reds rumor for Homer Bailey may have legs.
The White Sox should be one of the more interesting teams this winter, as they appear to be one contending team taking offers on some of their better players, including outfielder Jermaine Dye, closer Bobby Jenks and pitcher Javier Vazquez. Sox GM Ken Williams has historically been the most aggressive GM, and word is that he and manager Ozzie Guillen would like to make the team younger and faster.
The Reds have shown an interest in Dye, and the report in WCKY in Cincinnati that a deal of hard-throwing pitching prospect Homer Bailey and another prospect for Dye was discussed has not been denied. Bailey’s stock has to be down, but the Sox are one team that seems to be able to harness the talents of hard throwers (see Jenks and Matt Thornton).

White Sox asking too much for Dye?
Were told the Sox are still aggressively trying to move Jermaine Dye, Javier Vasquez and Bobby Jenks. It was probably no coincidence that team mouthpiece Ozzie Gullien came out publicly and did not disregard a deal involving his closer.
Ken Rosenthal says the White Sox asking price for Jermaine Dye is too steep.
Dye, earning $11.5 million in the final year of his contract, amounts to a one-season rental. He can block trades to six clubs, most of which are in the northeast, according to a major-league source.
One potentially interested executive said his team was concerned that Dye batted only .210 with runners in scoring position and two outs last season – 36 points below the American League average.
Lance McAlister of 1530 WCKY Cincinnati has this rumor of Dye to the Reds. This is the same Lance McAlister that used to host “Sportspage” on CLTV back in the early-mid 90’s. Looks a little different.
Things I’m told
MLB sources tell me the White Sox and Reds have been involved in trade talks.
I’m told the White Sox initiated the talks. The potential deal involves the Sox sending RF Jermaine Dye to the Reds in exchange for Homer Bailey and another player.
What do you think?
Dye is a right handed run producer that plays RF. He will be 35 in January.
He leads all AL OF in HR’s since 2005 with 137.
He has a gun for an arm, but does not move well in the OF.
Money wise: Here is his contract situation.
20009:$11.5M
2010:$12M mutual option ($1M buyout)
He has a limited no trade clause
Homer is 22-years old and has thrown just 81.2 major league innings.
