Piniella: La Russa not the commissioner

070701_larussa_hmed_1phmediumLou Piniella and Tony La Russa go way back to their days growing up in Tampa, Florida. So when Piniella laughed off La Russa’s recent comments regarding the Cubs, he was fully aware of La Russa’s strategy of drawing attention from the league to Derek Lee’s comments.

Cubs manager Lou Piniella laughed off critical comments from St. Louis counterpart Tony La Russa, saying Sunday, “Tony is not the commissioner.”

La Russa had said he didn’t “know how the Cubs get away with comments they make about umpires” after Derrek Lee questioned whether Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwrighthad gotten the benefit of the doubt Thursday on his controversial strikeout of Milton Bradley.

Piniella claimed ignorance of La Russa’s comments but was told what his Tampa childhood pal had said.

“He’s a good friend and a heck of a manager,” Piniella said. “But he’s not the commissioner of baseball. Not yet, anyway.”
