Miles could lead-off, Bako back, still no Peavy?

Cubs stuff is everywhere, just as we thought the Bears would dominate the rumor pages.

Tim Brown of Yahoo says the Cubs cleared just enough money to land Milton Bradley. They would not likely re-visit the Peavy deal.

Asked if Hendry’s dealings meant talks with the Cubs regarding Peavy might reopen, Padres GM Kevin Towers responded with a one-word email: “Doubtful.”

Hendry actually has made room for switch-hitting outfielder Milton Bradley.

Bradley’s agents have asked for a three-year contract for $30 million, according to baseball sources, and it is believed the Cubs will come close to that.

Bruce Levine says it would take new ownership approval.

A Peavy deal is still predicated on approval by the Cubs’ next ownership, in which they would have to sign off on the $63 million Peavy is owed over the next four years. Once again, Hendry has saved $11 million over the last two days. That money will go towards the $4.5 million that Aaron Miles will make over the next two years and Milton Bradley’s contract, which should be finished in the next 10 days or so.

Paul Sullivan has the Cubs signing former Cub Paul Bako to back up Geovany Soto and wonders if Lou Piniella will consider using Aaron Miles in the lead-off spot.

Paul Bako, another left-handed hitter, is expected to sign a one-year deal for around $500,000. The Cubs don’t want a backup who costs much or expects to play a lot. Bako certainly fits the bill, and is considered a good clubhouse presence.

Piniella previously has stated, repeatedly, that Soriano is his leadoff man and there is no other option on the roster. But that chestnut is officially history, as Miles can bat at the top or the bottom of the order.
